HOUSE MUSIC: The Weeknd and the high life

The Weeknd has seen astronomical success over the last year and my inner hipster wants to tell you that I was listening to his music before he got all super popular. But I digress. The Weeknd, also known as XO has always mentioned different acts of drug use in his lyrics from metaphorically to literally. Take a listen to his song "Glass table girls" and you'll get an explicit invite into his drug use. More mainstream songs like " I can't feel my face" deliver clever metaphors linking being smitten in love with drug use. And now you have his latest hot sing "Starboy" where he blatantly sings in the course "Cut that ivory into skinny pieces, then she clean it with her face". Look, I am the biggest proponent of freedom through artistry and this seems to be his way of expressing himself through his lyrics. But, we live in a world where drug abuse among young adults is too prevalent. We live in a society where drug overdoses are becoming a norm. I just hope listeners are appreciating the artistry and not thinking that to live a lifestyle like his that they need to result to drug abuse.
