Sitting down to take a stand?
Wow. That ended quickly, huh? As soon as we found out that Mike Evans (wide receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) would be sitting down during the national anthem to protest a Donald trump presidency he came out and said that he would no longer sit. So let's compare this to Colin Kaepernick's protest. Colin Kaepernick is not standing during the anthem to bring awareness to the oppression of minorities in our country. A lot of people disagree with his actions but don't disagree with his purpose. Mike Evans was taking a seat because he doesn't like who our president-elect is. Huh? Obviously someone had a heart to heart with him to explain how much sense that didn't make. Especially since the national anthem has nothing to due with who the president is. And to add insult to injury, he decided to sit during the NFL's " Salute to service weekend". So of course veterans and ex-veterans jumped all on his case. You think that's it? Nope. He even said that "He's really not that in to politics" and he didn't even vote.
Here is the positive in this story. Evans came out with a statement not only saying that he won't sit anymore but more importantly he says that he will find more effective ways to make a difference. This is the key that people need to take away. Look, everyone has the right to protest, complain or whatever you want to do. But as Gandhi said "Be the change you want to see". These are the people we need more of in this world. Not the talkers. We need to doers. Hats off to Mike Evans for understanding the difference and I look forward to seeing him making changes in our communities.
